Kharkivite Nominated a WTA’s Best Tennis Player of 2017

According to the official WTA website, world No.4 Elina Svitolina is a nominee in two categories: Best Tennis Player and Most Improved Player of the Year of 2017.

22-year old Elina Svitolina holds nine WTA titles including five won in the current season, three of which are Premier 5 series tournament. For the first time in her career, she reached the fourth round of both Wimbledon and US Open. Elina also recorded her second quarterfinal on clay at Roland-Garros in Paris.

She broke into the top 10 and hit a career-high ranking of three for the first time this year. This is the highest ever ranking record for any professional Ukrainian tennis player.

In WTA’s Best Tennis Player of 2017 category, Svitolina will compete with the current world No.1 Simona Halep from Romania and two Grand Slam winners in 2017, Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia and Spaniard Garbine Muguruza. Her other rivals are Karolina Pliskova, who also was No.1 this season, and Venus Williams, who reached two Grand Slam finals and returned to the WTA Top 5 in 2017.

Other nominees in the WTA’s Most Improved Player are France’s Caroline Garcia, Kristina Mladenovic, Jelena Ostapenko and American CoCo Vandeweghe, who reached two Grand Slam semifinals in 2017. The winners in each category will be chosen after the results of WTA Finals in Singapore.
