As of June 12, 2017, Kharkiv tennis player Elina Svitolina rose to No.5 in the updated WTA rating. Thus Elina sets new record becoming the first Ukrainian female tennis player in the WTA top 5.
Previously Andriy Medvedev was the highest ranked Ukraine’s male tennis players holding No. 4 of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rating.
Playing with an existing back injury in the quarterfinal of Rolland Garros 2017 22-year-old Ukrainian lost to Simona Halep 6:3, 6:7, 0:6, who eventually became a finalist of the tournament.
Currently, German Angelique Kerber is WTA No. 1 followed by Simona Halep (Romania), Karolína Plíšková (Czech Republic) and Serena Williams (USA). The only two other Ukrainians in the top 100 are Lesya Tsurenko (No. 37) and Kateryna Bondarenko (No.99).
