Another Activist Attacked in Kharkiv

Today anticorruption activist and head of Democratic Alliance in Kharkiv Yevhen Lisichkin was attacked near his house at about 10 a.m.

Two men beat him and threatened to kill him for his civil activism actions. After they ran off Lisichkin was brought to the hospital. Although he was diagnosed brain concussion other injuries were not severe, fortunately.

Over two weeks ago, August 30, two people insolently assaulted a deputy of the Kharkiv Regional Council and head of the Kharkiv anticorruption center Dmytro Bulakh. Today’s attack appeared to be the identical one – it also took place near the activist’s house and in broad daylight.

“These are the attempts to intimidate us. They would not work,” says Bulakh.

Lisichkin said to police that he remembered the attackers. According to him, they were 40-45-year-old men.

“I did not have any personal conflicts. The reason for this attack is definitely my anti-corruption activities. That followed from that the words of the attackers,” states Lisichkin.

The activists say they are going to hold the meeting at the session of the Kharkiv city council on September 20, and the assault might be connected with this. According to the activists, the latest investigation into the illegal car parking lots in Kharkiv or revealing fraud in government procurement might lead to the attack.

The Delegation of the European Union in Ukraine, which has the status of a diplomatic mission, published an appeal condemning the today´s attack on another Kharkiv anti-corruption activist, Yevhen Lisichkin. They called the authorities to protect the civil society representatives.
