Hundreds of Kharkivites Lit Torches for Battle of Kruty Centenary

A number of solemn events took place yesterday January 29 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Kruty.

The day ended with a torch-lit march of the members of several parties and organizations, common city residents joined them.

In the morning the Kharkiv military garrison and ATO veterans gathered at the parade ground of the National Academy of the National Guard of Ukraine with the cadets and teachers of the academy. Also, Kharkiv National University of Air Forces, NTU “KhPI” tank Forces Institute joined the general formation.

After the solemn meeting, the participants laid flowers to the stone for the Defenders of Ukraine on the square that has the same name.

At about 6:30 pm people gathered opposite the building of the regional state administration near the volunteers’ tent on Maidan Svobody. Over 7 hundred participants lit the torches and walked along Sumska street to Maidan Konstitutsii (Constitution square) proclaiming “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes” and other patriotic slogans. A short meeting on the square ended the march.

The organizers explain that the Battle of Kruty, which story was hidden in the Soviet times, played an important role in the Ukrainian state foundation. The defenders delayed the enemy’s advancing which allowed the Ukrainian delegation to sign the Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty. The memory about the heroes would help raise new generations of Ukrainians proud of their ancestors.

No commotions during the patriotic march were observed, the police reports.
