From August 29 until September 2, RSL Kharkiv International 2018 Badminton Tournament, Europe Cup stage, was held at the Lokomotiv Palace of Sports for the ninth time.
Only a few of these challenge tournaments still happen in Europe. Earlier majority of host cities decided to cancel the tournaments after a substantial rise in tournament prize money was dictated by the Badminton World Federation.
This time about 200 players from 34 countries came to play in Kharkiv. Badminton players from Australia, Egypt, Jordan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Finland, and Uzbekistan participated in the Kharkiv championship for the first time.
Ukrainian players got three bronze medals at the tournament. Kharkivite, Ukraine’s No. 1, Artem Pochtaryov got bronze in singles, defeating players from the Netherlands, India and Germany but losing to the rival from the Czech Republic.
Yulia Kazarinova and Olena Prus won bronze in women’s doubles. They beat sportswomen from Indonesia but lost to Sweden athletes in the semi-final. Valerii Atrashchenkov and Yelizaveta Zharkaya were third in mixed doubles. Ukrainians defeated players from India but were beaten by Polish. Olena Prus has the highest medal count in the Kharkiv Tournament. She won eight medals over 9 years.
Czech, Turkish, Indian and Sweden competitors won gold medals. Players from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Germany, Estonia and Poland got silver. And Ukrainians, Danishes, Israelis and Czechs won bronze.
