Last night Kharkivites heartily met the athletes who had competed in triumph at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.
The bus with the five Paralympians and their four guides arrived from Kyiv to Maidan Konstytutsii at around midnight. The solemn reception was held by the athletes’ families, sports fans and some regional officials.
The meeting was emotional and warm in contrast to the cold and icy weather set in this March. The officials noted that the results of Kharkiv athletes with disabilities were overwhelming this year as they were able to win 12 medals out of 22 won by all the national team, and brought to Kharkiv six gold medals out of total seven.
Due to the athletes and their coaches persistence and courage, Ukraine was ranked sixth in the overall standings.
Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Yulia Svitlychna promised to do her best to get Vitaliy Lukyanenko and Oksana Shyshkova awarded with the titles of the honorary citizens of the Kharkiv region, as they got most of the gold medals and became real heroes of the 12th Paralympic Winter Games.
The athletes will receive monetary awards from the state. The regional budget allocates 100,000 UAH ($4,000) for each gold, 70,000 UAH ($2,800) for silver and 50,000 UAH ($2,000) for bronze.
