Runaway Oligarch Dispossessed of Metalist Club

Yesterday Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko, who was visiting Kharkiv within the Law Forum, told about a series of important investigations concerning the city.

The biggest news was about famous Kharkiv football club Metalist which was acquired by oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko, connected with Yanukovych, at the end of 2012. The purchase price was supposed to be $300 million.

According to Yuriy Lutsenko, the club and its property is going to be taken from the oligarch, who ran away in 2014, and returned to the state. Later the executive bodies will decide on its usage.

“We can proudly report that the football club Metalist will no longer belong to fugitive kleptocrats, but to Kharkivites,” Lutsenko said.

The Minister of Justice Pavlo Petrenko added that returning the club became possible due to the new special confiscation law, which was recently approved. However, the official did not specify which property and premises are implied.

At the same time, Lutsenko informed that investigators of the SBU and the General Prosecutor’s Office revealed the theft of $10 million at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology within the construction of a neutron accelerator. The test launch of a US-built nuclear installation was held at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology in March 2016. US investments in the project reached up to $80 million.

The money was taken out through fictitious companies, the Prosecutor General specified.

Also, Yuriy Lutsenko stated that the prosecutors are preparing to serve the accusation in the case of so-called “cooperative scheme” to a Kharkiv ex-governor and MP Mykhailo Dobkin, who was deprived of his parliamentary immunity in the summer. Also, Kharkiv Mayor Hennady Kernes is declared to be a potential suspect in the same case.
