Kharkiv Police Assisted by Trained Dogs

Police forces of Kharkiv have recently included trained dogs into their patrols. Among the breeds there are German Shepherds, Labradors, and Spaniels.

According to the Kharkiv Patrol Police office, the specialized dogs are capable of searching for drugs and even of detaining criminals. The policemen believe their work efficiency would increase significantly due to the four-legged helpers.

Eleven cops and their new assistants have already being trained for about three weeks at the Cynological Center of National Police Control.

“The policemen learn to work with the specialized dogs under the guidance of professional cynologists twice a week. The methods of dealing with dogs during the detention of criminals or detection of drugs, explosives, and weapons are given in lectures and practical classes,” representatives of the patrol police explain.

Also, for over a month the joint pilot patrols including a law enforcement officer, a dog training service expert and a police dog have guarded Kharkiv streets by the initiative of the Patrol Police Office. During this time with a help of service dogs, the policemen managed to detect some cases of storing drugs and to detain an alleged robber.

It is planned that a specialized dog will be a part of several patrols and the number of four-legged assistants could grow in the near future.
