Youth Sports School in the town of Pokrov, Dnipropetrovsk region, was named after Kharkiv young patriot Danylo Didik, killed three years ago as a result of the terrorist attack in Kharkiv in February 2015.
Together with his friends, 15-year-old Danylo took part in the patriotic march near the Palace of Sports at Novi Doma area when a mine exploded under the foot of the column of people with Ukrainian flags. The pro-Russian organizers of the attack are still on trial.
In addition to naming the sports school, the memorial plaque to the young patriot was installed on the school’s wall. On May 18, the boy’s father, volunteers and parents of Danylo Didik’s classmates attended the solemn opening in Pokrov.
The mayor of Pokrov Oleksander Shapoval says, “It’s important for us all to remember Danya Didik and those who consider the independence of Ukraine to be their life’s purpose. The boy understood this at the age of 15, he joined the March of Dignity consciously. We will remember him.”
The mayor also highlighted that the name of Danylo Didik will help the local athletes to gain victories and to glorify Ukraine at championships and tournaments, as this boy was also keen on sports.
Father of the young hero, Andriy Didik, says he is happy that his son’s life will inspire young students and athletes.
Also, many activists, teachers, students and their parents support the initiative to honor Danylo Didik in Kharkiv school 11, where he studied. In winter 2018, they submitted the corresponding petition to the city council, which was signed by over 5,000 people in just eight days.
