March 8, over a hundred women and men went out on the women’s solidarity march “Everyone is Different. Everyone is Equal” in Kharkiv.
A motley column with placards and slogans “My Body, My Choice,” “Yes to Sex – No to Sexism,” “March 8 is for Fighting” walked from the Arkhitektora Beketova metro station to Maidan Konstytutsii. On the square, the participants arranged a stage where every woman could speak out her demands and ideas.
According to the coordinator of the Kharkiv Women’s Association “Sphere” Anna Sharyhina, the march’s purpose was to give an opportunity to women to support each other and to demonstrate that despite all their differences, everyone has equal rights.
“It was very important for us to state that everyone should enjoy equal rights and the state must provide access to these rights and protect them,” Sharyhina says.
As if in compliance with this statement, 200 law-enforcement officers guarded the women’s march, comprising policemen and a number of cadets from the National Guard.
The March of Equality and Gender Discrimination in Kharkiv has been held for three consecutive years. In 2016 and 2017 some commotions and provocations took place during the events. Fortunately this year there were no incidents to report.
Reference: The march was held in conjunction with educational “Women’s Solidarity Week.” A number of cultural and educational events have taken place this week. The main issue this year was the woman’s body aspects and its perception in society.
