Kharkivities Set New National Singing Record

A new Ukrainian national record was established on Maidan Svobody on October 18.

About 5,000 students and faculty members of Karazin Kharkiv National University, as well as pupils of Kharkiv schools, performed “Prayer for Ukraine,” which is considered Ukrainian spiritual anthem, in open air format.

The anthem was written by famous Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko and lyrics – by Oleksandr Konysky in 1885. Notably, Lysenko used to be a student of the Kharkiv University. The record was also timed to mark the 175th anniversary of his birth.

The collective choir was conducted by artistic director of the University’s Academic Student Choir, artistic director and chief conductor of the Academic Chamber Choir named after V. Palkin of the Kharkiv Philharmonic Society Andriy Sirotenko.

According to him, he has already conducted large choirs, but such a multi-thousand crowd of singers is a unique experience.

“We did not expect the huge amount of interest but lots of students, as well as Kharkivities, wished to take part in the event,” the University’s rector Vil Bakirov noted.

Previously, the record belonged to Truskavets where 2843 people sang together.
