The monument to the rector of the Kharkiv University in 1841–1849, Ukrainian writer, poet, historian, and philologist Petro Hulak-Artemovsky was unveiled next to the site of the Karazin Kharkiv National University yesterday.
It took sculptor Oleksandr Ridny more than a year to create his work. The monument now stands in Shevchenko Gardens on the site where the statue of the University’s founder Vasily Karazin used to be located.
The monument has an interesting design: the bronze Hulak-Artemovsky is sitting on the old bench leaning his right hand on the cane stick. A pile of books is next to him. A highlight of the monument is a bird sitting on the back of the bench. That is how Hulak-Artemovsky looked at a historical photo of the 19th century.
The University community and patrons of the arts have raised funds for the monument.
