New Powerful Telescope to Be Built in Kharkiv

Institute of Radio Astronomy of NASU and Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics (KhNURE) recently agreed about cooperation in building a new powerful telescope and discussed their joint projects.

‘The new telescope with new characterizes and abilities will allow us to get higher level results in researching the Universe’ says Ruben Fediy, deputy director of The Institute for Radio Astronomy. ‘This is not something brand new, as this device has been built on the basis of Kharkiv old radio telescope UTR-2, which is the biggest in the world within its frequency range, it is installed in Volokhiv Yar, 60 km from Kharkiv.’

It is also remarkable that the two institutions decided to build a network of telescopes – radio interferometers in other cities of Ukraine.

‘We have such branches already in Odessa, Lviv, Poltava and we also want to increase the number of local spots,’ explains Ruben Fediy.

Cooperation will also be carried out in the field of postgraduate studies and international educational programs say the meeting participants.

‘We need new bright students for our post graduate programs, and we can offer them promising opportunities as they can study in Ukraine and abroad at the same time and get two diplomas at once: one from our institution and another from Austria or France,’ Ruben Fediy claims.
