Plan B Festival Comes back to Kharkiv

Plan B Festival of Social Innovations and New Music will take place in various locations on February 15-17. The event will be held in the previously announced format: conferences will be carried out in the afternoon and parties in the evening.

The socio-cultural conference will bring together more than 50 speakers from 15 countries, from Cuba to the Balkans. The events’ key topics will be urban development, culture as a driver of change, and human rights. The night program includes 10 concerts and six parties, music headliners will be Sofa Surfers band from Austria and Ukrainian performers Alyona Alyona and Alina Pash. Three exhibitions will welcome guests: Tolerance traveling poster show, Cintorum interactive electronic exhibition from Culture of Sound and Digital Garden interactive exposition presented at Berlin A-Maze festival.

Daytime activities which include diverse meetings will take place at Mental Complex Studio, located at 2/2 Lopanska Embankment. About 500 cultural and social entrepreneurs, technical enthusiasts and activists from different countries are going to take part in the conference. Nonstop presentations by panelists will be held on February 16-17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Conference’s hot topics will include activism, urbanism and projects in urban space, development of the environment for honest business, art projects in the east of Ukraine, art and culture for the sake of change, human rights, volunteering and alternative education, media, populism and youth and other.

For the first time in Ukraine, the Mental Complex Studio will host Cintorum interactive exhibition of electronic music equipment, presented by Culture of Sound music project. All comers will be able to test equipment, join the creation of electronic music, take part in master classes and lectures concerning music creation. On Saturday evening, the event will culminate with a party in Kultura Zvuka Studio at 6 Kharkivska Embankment.

Those who are well-versed in video games or try to relate games to real life will be able to join Digital Garden interactive exposition.

The main stage of the Plan B night music program will traditionally be loft stage of the Opera Theater, СХІD OPERA. There will be several unexpected venues, united by common festival architecture. Guests will be able to enjoy the parties from experimental Ukrainian and foreign musical talent, taking place on February 15-16 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The night scene is a logical continuation of daytime events: some parties, for example, Progress Bar, are combined with discussions. As a result, connections and joint projects are born. The organizers are sure that music and club culture is also networking, and therefore they chose musicians who create bridges between cultures and become agents of change themselves.

In addition to Sofa Surfers, Prince Albert, Love’n’Joy, Tik Tu, Lyudska Podoba, Oy Sound System and Space Spice Boy with a military band that were announced last year, hip-hop singer Alina Pash will perform at Plan B. She artfully combines contemporary musical trends with ancient ethnic motives in her songs. New Ukrainian star Alyona Alyona will present a special festival network to the audience. Both singers will come to Kharkiv for the first time. Alyona Alyona’s show will be her first official performance. Last year she promptly burst into the Ukrainian music charts but has not given any official concerts or tours yet.

The festival will be held for the third time. It started in 2016 and has been taken place for two consecutive years. But last year it was canceled due to the declaration of martial law. Consequently, not all festival’s partners were ready to participate in the event. Therefore, organizers decided to hold a small pilot conference called Plan C on December 1.

The festival is organized with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

This year, the festival in its usual format will be opened for the third time in Mental Complex Studio at 6 p.m. on February 15.
