The Security Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region reported on having blocked spyware being spread across the country. The proceedings were performed together with the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.
“The malicious software was developed by a group of intruders from different regions of Ukraine to remotely and secretly access information from mobile devices,” speaker of SBU Office in the Kharkiv region Vladyslav Abdula states on his Facebook page.
The hacking software allowed intercepting telephone conversations, SMS and MMS, getting fix the subscriber’s location, recording conversations through popular messengers and e-mail and getting access to photo and video files stored on a mobile device.
The criminals sold their malware to customers through specially created web resources. After the customer had filled in the relevant application form on the site, he received initial test access to the service. After that, the customer got a link, which he had to upload onto the mobile device of the person he wanted to keep an eye on. The program started automatically as soon as the mobile device was turned on, it showed no signs of activity during operation and was hidden from the owner while stealing personal information.
The employees of the SBU Office in the Kharkiv region conducted a series of searches in the offices and places of residence of the group’s members. During the searches, the evidence of the illegal activity of the intruders was seized.
Criminal proceedings are being conducted. The culprits are charged with secretly receiving information with illegal use of special devices. They face prison terms from three to seven years if found guilty of the charges.
