Svitolina into Wimbledon Semifinal

On July 9, Kharkivite Elina Svitolina playing in her first quarter-final at Wimbledon beat Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic. The Ukrainian World No. 8 defeated World No. 68 7-5, 6-4.

The first set was a real battle for Elina trailing 2-5, she looked to be struggling after being given a hard time by the Czech’s fabulous rally’s and close net’s play, which entertained the huge crowd. Despite being given the run around by her crafty opponent, Elina eventually broke back against the Muchova serve twice, finding her ‘A’ game winning it 7-5. The second set proved a little easier as Svitolina served with power and precision playing nearer to the net powering many winners past the Czech player.

On July 8, the Ukrainian defeated in the fourth round World No. 24 Petra Martic from Croatia 6-4, 6-2.

The Kharkiv player faces former World No. 1, current World No. 7, Simona Halep from Romania in the Wimbledon semifinal on July 11.

It’s been a troublesome year for the Ukrainian, having suffered from a foot injury her world ranking has dropped but she has rebuilt her confidence and game and is looking back to her best.

Reference: Until this year, Svitolina had made the fourth round at Wimbledon as her best result. Notably, none of the Ukrainian tennis players had previously reached the Wimbledon semifinals in either women’s or men’s singles.
