May 20, Kharkiv tennis player Elina Svitolina won Italian Open, a prestigious WTA tournament in Rome, with a total prize of over $3.2 million.
In the championship finals, the world’s fourth Svitolina thrashed world number one Simona Halep 6-0 6-4 in just over an hour – the match lasted one hour and seven minutes.
This is the second consecutive Italian Open won by the Ukrainian and the third tournament, which Svitolina won in 2018 including Brisbane and Dubai.
Therefore Svitolina successfully defended her title in Rome with an incredible 12-2 record in WTA finals and 4-0 in P5 finals.
“It’s amazing that I could come and defend my title here. It’s really something very special for me,” said the Ukrainian tennis star.
Svitolina’s next tournament will be French Open at Roland Garros in Paris on May 27 – June 10, and she will go there being confident.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko sent his best wishes on Svitolina’s victory on his twitter. “We are proud of you, Elina! We are looking forward to your further victories to follow; they will be many, I am sure.”
Elina Svitolina thanked the President and invited him to watch her playing in Roland Garros: “Dear Mr. President Poroshenko, thank you greatly for your greetings! It is very nice of you to follow my results. Like all our athletes I am doing my best to promote Ukraine in the world. I would be happy to see you at my Roland Garros matches in Paris.”
