On October 28, Kharkiv resident Elina Svitolina won the 2018 BNP Paribas WTA Finals, beating World No. 6 Sloane Stephens, USA, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in Singapore.
In the semi-final, she defeated champion Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, Czech players Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova at the group stage, and Kiki Bertens in the semi-final.
The match with Stephens was one of the longest matches in Elina’s career and lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes.
The Kharkivite became the first player to go through the WTA Finals undefeated since Serena Williams in 2013. With this victory, she jumped three places in the latest world ranking up to World No.4.
Reference: WTA Finals, also known by its sponsored name BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore, is analogous to the World Tennis Championships and has been held since 1972 with the participation of eight world top best players. Reaching the final, the 24-year-old Kharkiv resident has established a historic achievement for Ukraine as none of our tennis players had been able to win a similar tennis tournament before.
