For the second year, Kharkiv is hosting an enchanting traditional Vertep Fest on January 13-14, which is timed to the Old New Year celebration.
The street festival is organized by the Kharkiv with You charitable foundation, which initiated and implemented the last year’s idea. The sensational success inspired the authors and participants to have it again. Now, ethnic art groups from all over Ukraine are coming to Kharkiv to perform on squares, streets, in the shopping malls and the city parks and gardens.
Festival coordinator Olena Rofe-Beketova says that teams from Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Poltava and Sumy regions have already registered for participating. As well as the teams from Luhansk and Donetsk region, Kharkiv will be presented by art groups of the Svyatovit regional festival.
Also, Bethlehem Dawn group from Ivano-Fankivsk, which got particularly popular last year, is coming back to Kharkiv too.
Festival organizer Iryna Markevych specifies that the major event’s driver is youngsters: 200 students from 22 regions of Ukraine, representing Ukrainian Academy of Leadership and Plast scouts, join the traditional art performances.
The events of Vertep Fest include a colorful parade of nativity scenes which will run from Maidan Konstitutsii to Maidan Svobody on January 13. The festival’s grand opening and a festive concert will take place on the same day. On January 14, roundtable discussions and workshops are planned.
“Our friends from Galicia are coming to play real trembitas – wonder for Kharkiv. Also, like last year, Arabesques theatre will present their Christmas performance, based on the play by Serhiy Zhadan,” says festival director Andriy Sheinin.
