Young Kharkiv Matematician Wins Gold in Italy

Last week Kharkivites met Alina Harbuzova, a senior school student, who won gold at the VII European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad in Florence, Italy.

The International Maths competition took place from April 9-15, 2018 and brought together 195 participants from 51 countries.

The senior student of the Kharkiv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum 27 proved best at solving problems. Kharkivite Alina Harbuzova was one out of four Ukrainian participants. Three others were from Kyiv and got two silver medals, gaining the fifth place as a team.

This is the second gold at the European Mathematical Olympiad for 16-year-old Harbuzova. She got her first one at VI European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad in Zurich, Switzerland, last year. The girl says she has been studying Mathematics since her early childhood and has won regional and national Olympiads since the age of 11.

In May, Alina Harbuzova is going to take part in the National casting to represent Ukraine in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania this summer.

Although Alina has received invitations from the Universities of the USA, UK and other countries, she is going to enter Karazin National University this year. She says she is currently learning English as she intends to study abroad in future.
