Kharkivite Takes Silver in Women’s Sprint Cycling at Olympics

On August 8, Kharkiv-born sportswoman Olena Starikova won silver at the women’s sprint cycling finals, gaining the 6th silver and the last 19th Olympic medal for Ukraine.

Starikova got to the sprint finals after defeating 2020 world champion Lea Freidrich from Germany in the quarter-finals of the race at the Olympics in Tokyo. The Ukrainian athlete beat Lee Wai Sze from Hongkong in the semifinals in two races.

In the sprint final, Olena lost to Kelsey Mitchell, the Canadian cyclist, the world record holder in this discipline. The Kharkivite lost to the Canadian in two races: in the first by 0,061 seconds, in the second – 0,064 seconds.

The Canadian Kelsey Mitchell won the tournament gaining a gold medal. Lee Wai Sze from Hongkong got bronze.

On August 5, Olena Starikova managed a fourth-place finish at the women’s keirin in the Olympic tournament.
