Kharkivites Kick Off in Women’s Champions League

Kharkiv women’s football team Zhytlobud-1 started its first round of the group stage in UEFA Women’s Champions League 2018/2019 by defeating Birkirkara FC from Malta 8:0 in Kharkiv on August 7.

On August 10, Kharkivites will play the next match with Welsh team Cardiff Metropolitan Ladies FC who were beaten by CFF Olimpia Cluj from Romania 3:2. On August 13, they will fight to qualify for the last 32 in the game against Olimpia Cluj.

Notably, since Zhytlobud-1 was started in 2006, they have been the Ukrainian Women’s League’s champion nine times. The team took part in Women’s Champions League tournament six times. According to the results of the first championship’s day, Kharkivites are at the very top of their group.

All the group’s matches will take place in the Kharkiv region. Five matches will take place in the village of Vysokiy in Metalist training camp and the Olimpia Cluj- Zhytlobud-1 match will be played at the Metalist stadium.

Reference: 60 football clubs will take part in the Women’s Champions League. Twenty highest-ranked teams will automatically qualify for the round of 32 while a further 12 participants have to win their place in the group stage. The winners of 10 groups together with two best teams, ranked second, will get into the play-off. Women’s Champions League 2018/2019 final will take place in Budapest, Hungary, in May 2019.
