Night Shooting at Kharkiv City Council

On August 20, at about midnight, an armed man, attempting to break into the Kharkiv City Council, started shooting at the building’s entrance, the department of National Police in the Kharkiv region informs.

Patrol police arrived at the scene and saw a wounded security guard near the building. As soon as the attacker noticed the police he opened fire on them. As a result, he wounded a police officer who later died in the local hospital. The 48-year-old security guard is in hospital in a serious condition.

In response, “the patrol used their service weapons and neutralized the attacker,” the Kharkiv region Police Department press service informs. The police are trying to identify the attacker who was about 40-45, height 165-170 cm.

The deceased police officer, first lieutenant, 29-year-old Dmytro Kiriyenko, left behind a 2-year-old daughter and a wife.

Criminal proceedings were opened and the case is under investigation.
